Course for Schools

The current COVID-19 global pandemic is a formative experience in the lives of children. We know that levels of anxiety are increasing all the time and that economic hardship may follow, putting families under yet more stress and instability. Mindfulness is not the answer to all mental health issues but we know that it helps children regulate their emotions, learn ways to exert control over their thoughts and feelings and helps build resilience, positivity and happiness. The happiness of children is at the heart of everything we do.

Paws b is a classroom introduction to mindfulness, taught by an experienced mindfulness practitioner. It is aimed at primary school pupils aged 7-11. It is a skillfully developed course consisting of 6 themes that can be delivered over 6 x 60 minute lessons or 12 x 30 minute sessions.

Each lesson is delivered in a fun and stimulating way gently introducing mindfulness practices. There is a lot of focus on the brain, its different areas and functions. Children really enjoy this and the cartoons, video clips and activities that make up each session. We have plenty of testimonials from children and staff!

The classroom teacher is usually present during every Paws b session. This means that the practices can continue outside of the weekly lesson. The structure of the curriculum looks like this:

Lesson 1: Our Amazing Brain - Let's Explore Our Amazing Brain!

Lesson 2: Puppy Training - Learning to Be in the Present Moment

Lesson 3: Finding a Steady Place - Grounding Ourselves When We Wobble

Lesson 4: Dealing With Difficulty - Managing the Amygdala

Lesson 5: The Storytelling Mind - Recognizing the Power of Thoughts

Lesson 6: Growing Happiness - Choosing to Nurture Ourselves and Others

This is challenging and exciting stuff! You can read here about the cutting edge research into the impact of the programmes developed by the Mindfulness in Schools Project. Schools that run the Paws b course receive a class impact report which collects data about the effects of the learning.
